Best Recording Studios in Brooklyn (2026)
Disclosure first, because every other page ranking for this search hides its angle: I own one of the studios on this list. Freshly Baked Studios is mine, in Crown Heights. The current top results are a membership site whose "reviews" read like stitched-together Google reviews, a competitor studio whose "7 best" list ends in a pitch for its own $3,000 sessions, and a decade-old magazine piece still recommending a studio that no longer exists. Brooklyn deserves a current, honest map from someone who actually works in these rooms' orbit, so here it is, my own room included and clearly flagged, judged by the same standards as everyone else's.
The Map, by What Each Room Does Best
The Bunker Studio (South Williamsburg), Brooklyn's live-tracking heavyweight: two Neve tracking suites, an SSL mix room, in-house mastering, and a client list that runs Spoon, Big Thief, and Yo La Tengo. If you're a band cutting live to a world-class desk, this is the room, and it books out months ahead. Rates unpublished.
Studio G (Williamsburg/Greenpoint border), 10,000 square feet, five rooms, decades of history and Latin Grammy-winning work through the doors. The scale play: options from budget rooms to the big floor. Rates unpublished.
Mission Sound (Williamsburg), commercial since 1999 around a vintage Neve, with Arctic Monkeys and The National in the ledger. The classic rock-record room. Rates unpublished.
Virtue and Vice Studios (South Williamsburg, on Franklin Ave), Anthony "Rocky" Gallo's room, built around a vintage Neve 8026 loaded with 24 1084s, with a large live room under a 14-foot ceiling and real daylight. Rocky's own credits run Norah Jones, John Legend, and Cigarettes After Sex. This is the one I'll vouch for personally: I love the place, Rocky is great, and it's a great big room that sounds great for drums and live stuff, with a big console to match. It's where I've been taking records of mine that need a live room. Rates unpublished.
Degraw Sound (Gowanus), producer Ben Rice's engineer-run shop since 2012; Valerie June, Ben Platt, a #1 holiday record. Production-forward: you're booking a creative partner, not a room. Rates unpublished.
Donut Shop Studios (Williamsburg), the hip-hop and R&B vocal-session standard, Augspurger mains, and credit to them: the only other studio in Brooklyn publishing rates, $95โ$125/hour by engineer tier, blocks from $2,450/25 hours.
Nowhere Studios (East Williamsburg), the new room (2023) built deliberately for indie and alt-rock: five-piece live tracking, a backyard, community programs. The scene room for guitar bands. Rates on inquiry.
Freshly Baked Studios (Crown Heights, mine), the engineer-run one-stop: recording, mixing, mastering, and Dolby Atmos carried by one multi-platinum engineer (19 Billboard Top 20 albums) instead of a staff roster, priced by project with public rates, mastering from $250, mixing from $800, and a free consultation. The fit: artists who want one accountable ear from first vocal to release-ready master rather than a different hand at every stage. Judge it against the others exactly as skeptically as this paragraph deserves.
Worth knowing too: Vinegar Hill Sound (DUMBO), Spaceman Sound (Greenpoint), Atomic Sound (Red Hook), and Mansion (24/7 hip-hop sessions) all do real work.
The Rates Nobody Prints
Here's the industry's least-kept secret: almost no Brooklyn studio publishes prices. The last real editorial survey (BKMAG, 2016) recorded day rates of $400โ$750 at the name rooms; a decade of rent later, expect roughly $600โ$1,500 per day, engineer included, at the established tracking studios, and always ask the three questions that expose a bad room: who exactly engineers, what do I leave with, what's the revision policy. The two studios with numbers on the page are Donut Shop (hourly, above) and mine (per project). One more thing worth knowing if you're bringing your own engineer: when I take a project into a room like Virtue and Vice, I've been getting it at room cost, because there's no house engineer on the bill. I usually take over the desk. Nobody prints that rate either, and it depends on the project, but it's one more reason to ask exactly who is engineering before you ask what the day costs. Draw what conclusions you like about quote-only pricing; I've drawn mine, which is why my calculator answers in a minute.
One Correction the Other Lists Need
Strange Weather is closed. The room behind Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, and The War on Drugs sessions lost its building to development, and founder Daniel Schlett moved to SoundWork International in Manhattan. It still appears on currently-circulating "best of Brooklyn" lists, a decent test of whether a guide was researched or generated.
How to Actually Choose
Match the room to the record: live band on analog, Bunker, Mission, or Virtue and Vice; producer-driven build, Degraw or Freshly Baked; hip-hop/R&B vocals, Donut Shop or Mansion; indie guitars, Nowhere; scale and options, Studio G. Then remember the rule that outranks every gear list: the engineer matters more than the room. Every studio above is good; the one that's right is the one whose person, price, and process fit your record, and if you want to check whether the record itself is ready for any of them, the analyzer is free and tells the truth.
