After 20 years and 19 Billboard Top 20 albums, I've been on every side of this: the mixer being hired, the producer hiring mixers, and the engineer fixing mixes that came back wrong from the cheap tier. Here's what the market actually charges and what each tier actually buys.

The tier that matters for most serious independent artists is $200–$800: engineers whose names appear on records you can actually stream, working per-song with a defined revision policy. Below that band you're mostly buying speed; above it you're buying a specific famous sound.
What Moves the Price Inside a Tier
- Track count. An 8-stem singer-songwriter session and a 90-stem pop production are different jobs. Many mixers price in stem brackets; ask.
- Session condition. Labeled, printed, tuned stems mix hours faster than a raw session. Preparing your tracks properly is the one discount every artist controls.
- Revisions. Two to three rounds is industry standard. "Unlimited revisions" sounds generous and usually signals someone with no queue.
- Vocal production. Tuning, comping, and editing are sometimes inside the rate, sometimes $50–$150 on top. Get it in writing.
