Music Promotion in 2026: The Honest Version

Around 150,000 new tracks hit streaming services every day, and nearly everything ranking for "music promotion" is written by someone selling promotion. Distribution platforms with seven upsells per article, curator marketplaces, agencies, and straight-up placement storefronts. I sell none of that, so I can afford to tell you the thing they can't: most music promotion fails for a reason that has nothing to do with promotion.

The Order of Operations Nobody Selling Ads Will Give You

Promotion buys listeners. The record converts them. That's the entire economics of this, and it's why the same $500 campaign makes one artist a fanbase and makes another artist a spreadsheet of skips.

Here's how I'd say it to a client: your promotion will always convert if the song is up to par and you put the time in the way it needs to be put in. Both halves. Blog placements, editorial pitches, YouTube, Meta ads, every one of those channels works when it's carrying a record that holds people, and every one of them is a donation when it isn't. The tactic was never the variable. The record and the effort are.

Before spending anything, look at your save rate. A healthy release converts saves at roughly 10% of streams. If your last release is well under that, promotion spend is premature: you'd be paying to have more people confirm the record doesn't hold them. I wrote up the full conversion math in why your song gets streams but no fans. The blunt version: fix the record first. If you're not sure which side of the line you're on, the free analyzer measures your track against 320,000+ releases in your lane, including how records like yours convert.

The Scam Layer, Named

The top-ranking guides give this a single throwaway sentence, so here it is properly:

"Guaranteed streams" means bots. Real playlists can't guarantee anything; software can. Placements on bot playlists run $50โ€“$500 and can trigger Spotify's artificial-streaming enforcement: streams removed, tracks flagged, in bad cases catalog penalties. Beyond the risk, bot streams poison your algorithmic profile, Spotify's recommendation engine learns from who listens, and when the answer is "no one," your Fans Also Like and Radio placements learn it too.

Legitimate paid pitching exists, with modest expectations. SubmitHub charges about a dollar per curator pitch, Groover about 2 euros per contact with a guaranteed response, Playlist Push starts around $280 per campaign. These buy consideration, not placement. Independent testing across services found most campaigns produce a spike that decays, with cost-per-stream ranging from a penny to over 80 cents, and only a minority showing sustained growth. Useful for testing a song's reception; not a growth strategy.

What's Actually Free (Most of What Works)

  • The editorial pitch. One song per release, through Spotify for Artists, at least 7 days before release. Guarantees Release Radar placement to your followers regardless of the editorial outcome. Full playlist breakdown here.
  • Short-form video. The dominant discovery channel, and it costs a phone. The same clip works on TikTok, Reels, and Shorts, and increasingly ranks in Google itself.
  • Pre-saves and your own profile tools. Canvas, lyrics, Countdown Pages. Free signals that you're an active artist.
  • Consistency. The algorithm rewards artists who release regularly far more than any single push.

How This Works at My Studio

Full disclosure of my own bias, since I called out everyone else's: clients who work with me at my full rate get me on the marketing side too, not just the faders. I help set up the ads, the editorial pitches, and the blog outreach, I research which blogs are actually worth pitching for your genre, and I use the analyzer's data when pitching playlists, because a pitch with numbers in it reads differently than a pitch with adjectives. I don't sell promotion as a product. It comes with the record, because the record and the promotion are one system, and splitting them between vendors who never talk to each other is how most releases die.

The Bottom Line

Budget promotion the way you'd budget anything else with a conversion rate: prove the conversion first, then buy volume. The full release budget, promotion included, is itemized here. And if this order of operations means putting money into the record instead of ads this quarter, that's not a consolation prize; that's the strategy.
