How Many Monthly Listeners Do You Need to Make a Living on Spotify?

For a $30,000 a year gross from Spotify, you need about 714,000 streams a month, which is somewhere between 71,000 and 143,000 monthly listeners depending on how often those listeners come back. Only 30.2% of the 221,627 artists in our database are above the low end of that range, and 21.9% are above the high end.

After 20 years, 19 Billboard Top 20 albums and catalog that's crossed 3.3B+ streams, I'll tell you the part nobody puts on the poster. Streaming pays roughly $3,000 to $4,000 per million streams. That's the number the whole question hangs on, and it's smaller than people want it to be.

The Math Comes First

I'll use $3,500 per million, the middle of that range, and call it $0.0035 a stream. These are gross payouts to the rights holder, before your distributor, before any split with a co-writer or producer, before tax.

Gross yearly goal Streams needed per year Per month Listeners at 5 plays each At 10 plays each At 20 plays each
$12,000 3.43M 285,714 57,143 28,571 14,286
$30,000 8.57M 714,286 142,857 71,429 35,714
$60,000 17.14M 1,428,571 285,714 142,857 71,429

The plays-per-listener columns are my assumption, not a measured number. Your own figure is in Spotify for Artists (streams divided by listeners), and it's worth looking up before you believe any row of this table. A narrow, devoted audience that replays you sits near the right side. A playlist audience that heard you once sits near the left. The same $30,000 is 36,000 listeners in one case and 143,000 in the other.

How Many Artists Are Actually There

I ran each of those listener counts against the latest reading for every artist in our tracking database, 221,627 of them, readings taken between February 2025 and October 2026.

Monthly listeners Artists at or above Share
14,286 116,368 52.5%
28,571 94,388 42.6%
35,714 87,420 39.4%
57,143 73,198 33.0%
71,429 66,834 30.2%
142,857 48,641 21.9%
285,714 33,302 15.0%

Read it against the table above. If your listeners replay you 20 times a month, a $30,000 year is inside the top 40% of artists we track. If they replay you 5 times, it's the top 22%. Same money, very different mountain. Our median artist has 17,060 monthly listeners, which is a hobby-sized check on every row here.

One caveat, and I'd rather you trust the numbers than like them. This isn't all of Spotify. It's artists that show up on Chartmetric with a public way to reach them, so it under-counts the bedroom uploads with eleven listeners. The real share above any line is lower than what you see here.

Once You Get There, Do You Stay?

Better than I expected. For 124,356 artists with two readings about six months apart (mean gap 174 days), I checked who was above a line at the first reading and still above it at the second.

Line Artists above at first reading Still above 6 months later Fell below, if they started within 2x of the line Crossed up from below
10,000 84,027 95.8% 23.2% 6.1%
50,000 53,120 94.9% 17.8% 4.3%
100,000 39,833 94.4% 16.0% 3.2%
300,000 21,312 92.6% 17.6% 1.8%
1,000,000 9,608 92.7% 15.8% 0.6%

Two readings. Most of the people above a line stayed above it. But the ones who had just barely made it, sitting between the line and twice the line, dropped back under about one time in six. Crossing 100,000 is not the same as being established at 100,000. And look at the last column: of the artists under 100,000 at the first reading, 3.2% crossed it in six months. This is the part where a hot streak and a career look the same from the inside.

What I'd Do With This

Before you ask whether you have enough listeners, ask whether you're the artist whose listeners come back. In why your song gets streams but no fans I wrote about the gap between hearing you once and choosing you. That gap is the whole table above: it's the difference between the 20-plays column and the 5-plays column, which is a factor of four on how many people you need.

And I'd be honest about the other income. I wrote out the full stack in how much singers make, because Spotify alone almost never carries an artist at the 30,000 listener level. Shows, sync, production, teaching and merch do the lifting, and streams are the floor under them.

If you want the plan to hold, the records have to be good enough to keep people. That's a production question, and it's why I care about how a mix is made more than the screenshot. Budgeting that honestly, against what a producer costs, is the dull part that makes the rest work. The rate calculator prices the work calibrated to where you actually are as an artist, not where the label artist down the hall is.

I don't promise any of this pays. Nobody can. I'm just not interested in guessing when the database will tell me.

Method

221,627 artists with at least one Spotify monthly-listener reading, latest reading per artist, readings dated February 12, 2025 to October 19, 2026 (171,727 refreshed since June 2026). Source: the Freshly Baked Studios artist database, populated from Chartmetric. Listener counts were cleaned from text fields and cast to numbers. The hold table uses each artist's latest reading and the earlier reading closest to 170 days before it, within 150 to 240 days (124,356 artists, mean gap 174 days); a "fell below" figure counts artists who started at or above the line but under twice the line. Revenue figures are arithmetic at $3,500 per million streams, the midpoint of the $3,000 to $4,000 range, not measured payouts. Plays per listener is an assumption, not a computed value.
