Spotify Promotion: What Works and What Gets You Flagged
Search this phrase and everything below Spotify's own support pages is written by a promotion vendor, including the "review" articles, one of which ranks its own company in its own list. Every vendor page says "real curators, no bots." None of them tell you what happens when the promotion is bots, because the answer is now specific, financial, and unprintable on a sales page. I don't sell promotion. Here's the whole picture, enforcement first.
The Rules Nobody Selling Promotion Prints
Since April 2024, Spotify doesn't just delete fake streams. When more than 90% of a track's monthly streams are detected as artificial, the track's royalties are withheld and a penalty of roughly $10 per track, per month, is billed to your distributor, who passes it to you. DistroKid, TuneCore, and CD Baby all document passing it through, and repeat offenses can end the distribution account entirely. Flagged tracks also quietly lose what actually matters: eligibility for Radio, Autoplay, Daily Mix, and Discovery Mode.
Here's the part that should worry you even if you'd never buy streams on purpose: you can buy bots by accident. A $50 "placement" on a botted playlist looks identical to a real one at checkout. Which is why the skill isn't picking a vendor, it's reading your own data afterward, more on that below.
The Only Guarantee in the System Is Free
Every paid service disclaims guaranteed placement (read their fine print, refunds cover "curator didn't respond," never results). Meanwhile Spotify itself offers one actual guarantee: pitch an unreleased song via Spotify for Artists at least 7 days before release, and it's guaranteed into the Release Radar of every follower you have. Free, official, and it's the reason the release timeline matters more than any promotion budget. Algorithmic placement beyond that, Discover Weekly, Radio, is earned by listener behavior, not pitched and not purchasable.
The Three Things Called "Spotify Promotion," Priced
- Bot sellers. "10,000 guaranteed streams, $50." See above: withheld royalties, penalty invoices, algorithmic exile. The only tier with a guarantee, and the guarantee is the problem.
- Curator marketplaces. SubmitHub (
$1 per pitch), Groover (โฌ2 per contact), Playlist Push ($280+ per campaign), and the done-for-you tiers between $57 and $300. Legitimate; you're buying a listen, not a result. Independent testing across services found cost-per-stream from $0.01 to $0.82 and most campaigns spiking then decaying. Fine for testing a song's reception. - Ads promotion. Meta or Google traffic pointed at your track, from a few dollars a day, or agencies from ~$450. The most honest paid tier, because it scales with exactly one thing: whether the record converts strangers.
How I Actually Vet Playlists (Burned Once, Not Lately)
I've been placed on botted playlists, it's happened to me, though not in a long time, because I built a system. Two parts:
Vet in the right order. Pitch everyone plausible first, and only research the ones that accept. There's no point burning hours vetting playlists that will never answer; see what lands, then check who's confirmed, and if there's a payout involved, that's the moment you verify, not before. It still takes real time and research. That's the price of not buying an audience of software.
Use the tools. Before a song of mine goes on a playlist, I run the playlist through isitagoodplaylist.com, it reads the playlist's health so you know what you're placing into ahead of time. And after placement, the tip-off for a fake is timing: a drop in listeners within days of getting placed. Real playlists build; botted ones spike and fall off a cliff while the bill clears.
Read Your Own Campaign Like an Engineer
Whatever you buy, the receipts are in Spotify for Artists. Real audiences save (healthy is around 10% of streams), finish songs, and reappear across your stats. Bots stream and vanish: near-zero saves, mechanical streams-per-listener, skips that spike. That skip data feeds the algorithm, which is the deeper point of the whole promotion economics picture: promotion delivers listeners, and the record converts them or doesn't. If yours isn't converting, that's not a promotion problem, and the free analyzer will show you what is, against 320,000+ records in your lane.
