The Data
Everything on this page is a measurement. The audio numbers come from the Sonic Analyzer corpus, 320,000+ released tracks run through the studio's own pipeline, and the listener numbers come from the Spotify artist histories we track ourselves. Most of what gets said about loudness, tonal balance, and what a breakout record sounds like is folklore, and I would rather you check it against the data than take my word for it.

What Percentage of New Releases Break Out? Breakout Rate by Genre
Of 51,868 releases with usable listener history, 7.4% were followed by the artist doubling their monthly listeners within 90 days. Lane by lane it runs from 13.8% (folk and country) to 5.5% (hip-hop), and the artist's starting size moves it far more than genre does.
How We Measure
Every audio number on this page comes from the studio's own analysis pipeline, run on released recordings, the same pipeline behind the free Sonic Analyzer. A breakout means the artist at least doubled their Spotify monthly listeners within 90 days of the release. Every pattern we publish was found on one sample and then checked on a holdout the rules had never seen; nothing is reported on its discovery sample. Each post carries its own sample size and its own catches, and those are worth reading before the headline.
